What is Hydromulching?

Residential LandscapingHydromulching (also referred to as hydroseeding) is a process in which seed, mulch, tackifier, water, and sometimes fertilizer and soil amendments are mixed together by a specialized machine and sprayed as a slurry onto the ground. The mulch helps to aid germination by retaining moisture and insulating and protecting the seeds. Although this process is typically far less expensive than sodding a new lawn, it is not for everyone. Below are some considerations you should take when deciding whether hydromulching is right for you:

  • Is your lawn bare, that is, are you starting from scratch? Sodding a new lawn can be quite expensive, but the results are nearly instant. Seeding on the other hand, will require patience, and in Oklahoma’s climate, care. However, if your new lawn is large enough (10,000 SF or greater), you will realize significant cost savings by hydromulching. If your entire lawn is not bare and you are only looking to fill in some bare spots or bolster the grass you already have, your best bet may be to just broadcast seed it yourself. This is a very inexpensive option; we would be glad to give you some tips and suggestions on how to do this.

  • Do you have a large area to cover? As mentioned above, your cost savings can be significant if you need to cover an area of 10,000 SF or greater. In some cases, the costs to hydromulch may be half the cost of a new sodded lawn, and as the size of the area increases, so will your savings.

  • Are you looking for an alternative to bermuda? Bermuda is by far the most commonly sodded grass in Oklahoma, and although there are some other species that can be sodded, these species can be cost prohibitive when installed on a large scale. Hydromulching, however, gives you the ability to plant many other species, and even specially tailor a mix or blend suited to your exact needs.
